Dear Heidi,

I am writing to ask if you would be willing to write me a recommendation for graduate school, again. I know that you are currently on G-chat and I could easily call you to do this for me. But I wanted this to be slightly more formal.

I want to tell you that you have been such a great advisor, role model, and friend to me over the past couple of years and I'm so incredibly grateful. I would not be where I am today if it hadn't been for you and your positive influence in my life. I can't thank you enough for the things that you have done for me and the things you have encouraged me to do in order to make myself a better person.

I understand that you are a busy, busy lady and there is no hurry on this recommendation, but it would mean the world to me. I know I've told you this time and time again, but if I could be half the advisor and person you are I would be happy. You have changed my life for the better and I hope that one day someone will be able to say the same about me.
