Beyond the Three Dimensions

So, my dissertation was based on the concept that learning outcomes fit into three dimensions (or categories):

After analyzing the data from my dissertation study, I find that some of my findings blur the lines between 2 of the dimensions, or are outside the dimensions altogether. Here's a first visualization and explanation of a new framework I envision.

What follows are definitions and examples of the outcomes I found:

Affective-Behavioral

1. Ability and desire to live abroad

-        Example: skills and desire to pursue work or graduate school outside the US

Behavioral

2. Skills re: transition to adulthood or university-life

-        Example: Maintaining a household, washing dishes, ability to live independently

Behavioral-Cognitive

3. Professional Connections (skills and attitudes re: work)

-        Example: new desire and ability to work with wild as opposed to domestic animals

Cognitive-Affective

4. Academic Connections (knowledge and attitudes re: academics)

-        Example: Newly acquired knowledge leads to pursuit of a new major, Desire for continual learning

5. New Understanding of other cultures or humanity

-        Example: Learning about the host culture leads to a new perception of/relationship with host locals

Outside the Dimensions

6. Development/Shift in Personal Identity

-        Example: Discovery that one is adventurous, brave, able to travel without family; reaffirmation of Mexican heritage (“it validated my identity in ways I did not know needed to be validated”)

7. Development of Social Capital

-        Example: new friendships

8. Fond Memories

-        Example: fun stories to share with the grandkids one day

I value any reactions, thoughts, suggestions, ideas.
